There's an eight foot wall around my yard. I spent $10,000 to have it built. I had lots of good reasons to build it. It keeps trespassers out. It prevents feral animals from invading my yard and home. It reduces my liability by keeping children from falling into my pool.
But most importantly (to me) it keeps my beloved dogs secure inside my property. They can't leave unless I open a gate and allow them to leave.
It’s a great reason to build a wall around my yard, but THAT is the one good reason NOT to build a border wall.
I’m not a big Trump supporter. But I have no doubt his rhetoric about building a wall is an attempt to solve a very real problem. And it’s reinforced by his knowledge that the whole wall idea is popular with his base.
But his supporters should realize that any wall built to keep people out can also keep people in. If the people controlling the wall have your best interests in mind (and actually know what those best interests are), it's not a problem, right?
But there's no such thing as longevity for “benevolent dictators”. You don't hold power for long by being benevolent.
Sooner or later the tables turn, new regimes take over, and the walls built to protect you become iron curtains. You trust Donald Trump? Okay, what about the next guy?
What if Trump’s wall had been finished before Biden took over, and instead of using it as a political football Sleepy Joe had been savvy enough to realize he could use that wall to let in only those he wanted to AND to let out only those he wanted to? Did you know that the Biden administration has been quietly reviving the wall construction over the past year? Maybe they’ve figured out the opportunity they were missing.
The only liberal solution (and I’m referring to classical liberalism, not woke faux liberalism) is to remove the incentives that draw unproductive, anti-civil elements here which reward them for illegally breaking into the country.
